Many thousands marched from Foley Square to City Hall then to Wall Street

Foley Square was the originating point of the march. The banner with barbed wire over the map of Palestine framed by poppies is a beautiful example of revolutionary art with a painful message hidden in a gentle graphic.

Searching for NYPD crowd size figure was fruitless so it’s mom math guesstimate based on subway train volumes. Each subway car has a max capacity of 250 passengers and eight cars totaling 2,000 people. How many full subway cars can you see?

That spacial image is my visual model for density and crowd sizes. At times folks were rush-hour platform tight. It’s got to be over 10,000 filling Courthouse Row; marchers poured past for over ten minutes before climbing down from this perch and rushing to get ahead of the front line at City Hall.

As a seasoned New Yorker with lots of street shooting under my belt it was an easy call to cut through City Hall Park and intercept the crowd before they headed down Broadway. Selectively helpful insider tip, depending on the part of town every subway station has an underpass that’s handy to cross streets closed for parade routes!

The procession continued down Broadway past Brown Brothers Harriman and Liberty Park, renamed Zucotti by the time Occupy Wall Street made its 2011 encampments.

It was almost five o’clock when they crossed the top of Wall Street which was blocked and the march continued south to a side street for an approach from Broad Street.

The fading light was practically blackness in the always dark cavern of Lower Manhattan. My legs were very tired from climbing light posts and scaffolding so marcher pics end there.
